Origins of  Diamonds (Avoiding Conflicts)

With the majority of world's diamonds coming from third world countries, the ethics of diamond purchasing is of great importance. In order to ensure the best quality diamonds as well as ethic purchase of such, regulatory law are put in order and enforced by Kimberley Process, J.R.Dunn which is a cooperative movement of governments and industries effectively eliminating illegal acquisition of diamonds. In such a way, all the diamonds are bought and sold according to certain rules preventing fraud or unjust enrichment. Diamonds associated with this kind of purchasing conduct are known as conflict-free diamonds.

Diamond Quality & Characteristics

As far as diamond quality is concerned there are four parameters on which to judge diamond’s quality. They are known as 4C, consisting of carat weight, cut, clarity and color. Based on these four characteristics we can evaluate diamond quality. The most important factor is the cut, which is also the most complicated one. Diamond’s brightness and fire are a result of fine cutting. It is no wonder that great diamond cutters are experiencing heavy demand for their services. Clarity, on the other hand, depends on the conditions (pressure, temperature) which created the diamond. As a general rule, the less imperfections present in the crystallization phase the higher clarity of the diamond. Color is also of great importance, the rarer and more intense colors yielding higher diamond prices, as well as weight of the diamond, measured in carats.

Pearls

Pearls are usually formed inside seashells enveloping the irritating grain of sand with beautiful shell. The mucus generated by seashells solidifies and gives the pearl shine and hardness. As in the case with diamonds, there are also characteristics that are used to determine the quality of pearls. These are luster or surface glow, specifically desired in pearls, in parallel with surface perfection. Color is also significant, with such vivid colorings like cream, gray, blue or even pink pearls are gaining in their magnificence. Shape is also a fundamental characteristic, albeit majority of pearls are round spheres. Last but not least is the size. Simply bigger is better.

Gemstones

Gemstones are pieces of crystals or minerals which are cut and polished to be used as jewelry or other adornments. Certain rocks or organic materials such as amber are not minerals per se but can be used to create jewelry from and are as such often considered as gemstones as well. Majority of gemstones are hard and in order to increase their luster softer materials are used in the polishing process. Gemstones are used as a luxury. One of the most known and explicit use of gemstones is Faberge’s egg, covered with gemstones.

 Precious Metals (Gold, Silver, Platinum)

Luxury metals such as silver, platinum and of course gold have been used for elegant jewelry for ages. Things that need to be considered when deciding for luxury metals are how the jewelry will look on you, how cost effective is the choice of metal, is it durable, and if it might be sensitive to skin. Gold is timeless and represents wealth. It is also very durable and more cost effective than platinum. However, it can cause an allergic reaction with some people. Silver is elegant and very cost effective. It is not durable and can cause allergic reactions if mixed with nickel. Platinum is heavy dense material known to be lasting and non-allergenic. Nonetheless, the price tag of platinum is understandably the highest.

Find Your Ring Size

When a man buys a ring for a girl, the size is usually the issue because it’s hard to determine ring size without her knowing. The important thing here is to get the right unit of measure because ring sizes units are different in let say US/Canada than in Europe. The first thing to do is to find your ring size chart in order not to purchase the ring that won’t fit. Imagine the negative symbolism of buying ring of incorrect size.
